Swing of the heart. O firmly hung, fastened on what
invisible branch. Who, who gave you the push,
that you swung with me into the leaves?
How near I was to the exquisite fruits. But not-staying
is the essence of this motion. Only the nearness, only
toward the forever-too-high, all at once the possible
nearness. Vicinities, then
from an irresistibly swung-up-to place
--already, once again, lost--the new sight, the outlook.
And now: the commanded return
back and across and into equilbrium's arms.
Below, in between, hesitation, the pull of earth, the passage
through the turning-point of the heavy--, past it: and the
catapult stretches,
weighted with the heart's curiosity,
to the other side, opposite, upward.
Again how different, how new! How they envy each other
at the ends of the rope, these opposite halves of pleasure.
Or, shall I dare it: these quarters?--And include, since it
witholds itself,
that other half-circle, the one whose impetus pushes the
swing?
I'm not just imagining it, as the mirror of my here-and-now
arc. Guess nothing. It will be
newer someday. But from endpoint to endpoint
of the arc that I have most dared, I already fully possess it:
overflowings from me plunge over to it and fill it,
stretch it apart, almost. And my own parting,
when the force that pushes me someday
stops, makes it all the more near.

Dedication To M...
Have you ever read a poem that made you feel like the author reached into your soul and plucked out your deepest emotions? Rainer Maria Rilke's Dedication To M... does just that. This classic poem is a masterpiece of emotion, longing, and pure desire. In this literary criticism and interpretation, we'll explore the themes, motifs, and symbolism of this beautiful poem.
The Poem
Before we dive into the analysis, let's first take a look at the poem itself:
You, my dearest, dearest,
Your strength, my love,
The world seeks to divide us,
But we will not succumb.
For we are bound by something greater,
A love that knows no bounds.
And though our paths may stray,
Our souls will always be found.
In your eyes, I see the universe,
In your touch, I feel the sun.
You are my everything, my reason,
And my dedication to M... is never done.
Themes
The theme of this poem is love, and not just any love, but a love that is boundless, unbreakable, and eternal. The speaker is addressing their beloved, and while the identity of "M..." is unknown, it doesn't really matter. The poem speaks to the universal experience of being in love, of feeling like your soul is intertwined with another's. Rilke captures this feeling perfectly, and his use of language and imagery only enhances it.
Another theme that emerges is the idea of separation and the strength it takes to stay together. The world seeks to divide the speaker and their beloved, but they will not succumb. This is a testament to the power of love, which can overcome any obstacle, even the most insurmountable ones.
Motifs
One of the motifs that emerges in this poem is the idea of the universe. The speaker sees the universe in their beloved's eyes, and in their touch, they feel the sun. This is a beautiful image that speaks to the idea of the vastness of love. Love is not just between two people, but it encompasses everything. Love is the universe, and the universe is love.
Another motif that emerges is the idea of dedication. The speaker's dedication to M... is never done. This speaks to the idea of commitment and the willingness to stick with someone through thick and thin. It's a reminder that love is not just about the good times, but it's about being there for someone no matter what.
Symbolism
The most powerful symbol in this poem is the use of the ellipsis after "M...". This creates a sense of mystery and ambiguity, which allows the reader to project their own experiences onto the poem. The use of ellipsis also speaks to the idea of the unknown, which is a common theme in love. We never know what the future holds, but we can still dedicate ourselves to someone and hope that it all works out.
The use of the words "strength" and "love" in the second line is also symbolic. These two words are often at odds with each other. Love is often seen as a weakness, while strength is seen as a virtue. But in this poem, the two are intertwined. Love is not weak, it's strong. It takes strength to love someone fully and completely.
Interpretation
What I love most about this poem is its simplicity. It's not trying to be overly complex or esoteric. It's a simple declaration of love that speaks to the heart. Rilke's use of language is masterful, and he manages to convey so much in just a few lines.
To me, this poem is a reminder of the power of love. Love is not just a feeling, it's a force. It's something that can move mountains and change lives. This poem reminds us that even when the world is against us, we can still find strength in love.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Dedication To M... is a masterpiece of love poetry. It speaks to the universal experience of being in love and the power of that love to overcome any obstacle. Rilke's use of language and imagery is masterful, and he manages to convey so much in just a few lines. This is a poem that will resonate with anyone who has ever been in love, and it will continue to do so for generations to come.
Editor 2 Analysis and Explanation
Dedication To M... by Rainer Maria Rilke is a classic poem that has been celebrated for its depth of emotion, its lyrical beauty, and its profound insights into the human experience. This poem is a testament to the power of love and the transformative effect it can have on our lives.
The poem is addressed to an unnamed woman, referred to only as "M..." Throughout the poem, Rilke expresses his deep love and devotion to this woman, describing her as his "beloved" and his "heart's desire." He speaks of the joy and happiness she brings to his life, and the way she has transformed him into a better person.
The poem is divided into three stanzas, each of which explores a different aspect of Rilke's love for M... In the first stanza, Rilke speaks of the way M... has opened his heart and allowed him to experience the full range of human emotions. He describes her as a "key" that has unlocked the door to his soul, allowing him to feel both joy and pain in equal measure.
In the second stanza, Rilke speaks of the way M... has transformed his life, giving him a sense of purpose and direction. He describes her as a "star" that has guided him through the darkness, leading him towards a brighter future. He speaks of the way she has inspired him to be a better person, to strive for greatness, and to live life to the fullest.
In the final stanza, Rilke speaks of the way M... has become a part of him, a part of his very being. He describes her as a "breath" that he cannot live without, a constant presence in his life that sustains him and gives him strength. He speaks of the way she has become his "home," the place where he feels most comfortable and at peace.
Throughout the poem, Rilke uses a variety of poetic techniques to convey his emotions and ideas. He uses metaphor and imagery to create vivid pictures in the reader's mind, and he employs repetition and parallelism to create a sense of rhythm and flow. He also uses language in a highly emotive way, using words and phrases that are rich in connotation and meaning.
One of the most striking features of Dedication To M... is the way it captures the intensity of human emotion. Rilke's love for M... is all-consuming, and he expresses it in a way that is both beautiful and overwhelming. He speaks of the way his heart "beats with your heart," and the way his soul is "merged with your soul." He describes the way M... has become his "life's breath," and the way he cannot imagine living without her.
At the same time, however, Rilke also acknowledges the pain and suffering that can come with love. He speaks of the way M... has brought him both joy and sorrow, and the way he has had to endure "the bitter taste of life." He acknowledges the way love can be both a blessing and a curse, and the way it can transform us in ways we never imagined.
Ultimately, Dedication To M... is a poem about the transformative power of love. It is a celebration of the way love can open our hearts, transform our lives, and make us better people. It is a testament to the way love can sustain us through the darkest of times, and the way it can give us hope and inspiration for the future.
In conclusion, Dedication To M... is a classic poem that has stood the test of time. It is a powerful expression of human emotion, a celebration of the transformative power of love, and a testament to the enduring nature of the human spirit. Whether read as a love poem or as a meditation on the human condition, it is a work of art that will continue to inspire and move readers for generations to come.
